How to Mix & Match Accessories for a Unique Interior

I’m often asked how to mix and match accessories to create a unique interior. And while there’s no right way to curate your interior, we could all do with a few tips to steer us in the right direction.

As the editor of My Dream Haus, I’m obsessed with interior design and in particular home automation. So, I love the idea of effectively mixing different styles, forms and colours together to form a harmonious home that’s as unique as you!

Do you really love the piece?

You’ll never find harmony when arranging accessories if you don’t love each piece. If you feel lukewarm about certain elements, then it’ll be easily spotted as it’ll stick out. So you should love each element and allow them the space to present themselves without causing too much distraction.

For example, two current pieces from Micucci Interiors that I love are Rectangular Shagreen Tray with Bone Trim and the Mambo Unlimited Ideas Ant.

Shagreen Tray

The Tray is ideal for storing remotes in the living room, keys on a console table by the front door, or even jewellery in your wardrobe, especially if you want to create more of a high-end boutique look. Available in four colours, each of which is luxurious, subtle yet add instant interest to any room.

Ant-Ceramics-Ant ceramic hand crafted

Many, at first glance might consider the ceramic Ant as a bit too whimsical. However, it’s a fantastic object d’art that shows off a more playful side of your personality. Place it in a room to add a dash of individualistic colour without overpowering other elements.

Have you played with different arrangements?

With the two items I’ve highlighted, you’ll notice I talked briefly about where you can use them within your home. However, it’s worth discussing arrangements in more depth.

Most people buy items they love, only to struggle with their placement within the home, once they arrive. It’s not that they lack imagination or creativity. Usually, they don’t try and play with different elements, moving older piece into a different room and highlighting new accessories.

By constantly rotating objects, you keep your interior looking fresh and stays interesting. It’s a good challenge to keep adding new pieces and reimagining how you can use what you already have. Plus, it’ll keep you thinking about how to maximise what you already have.

If you already have a console table in your hallway, then you could add the Ant to one end and the tray at the other. You could next balance it out with some candles in the middle, a family photo or two, or even the excellent Column Table Lamp.

It’s all about experimenting and trying as many options as possible.

Remove half of what’s there!

Now, I know this might sound like the complete opposite of what you’re hoping for but stick with me. By remove objects, whether you take away one, two or half, you can being to find a unique angle, you might observe light hitting a piece in a pleasing way that you haven’t seen before.

Only by removing items can you begin to experience them in a different light. By doing this, you might find that you’re inspired to try a new arrangement or location.

The power of 3

Accessories work best in groups of three. I don’t know where this came from or why groups of three work so effectively, but I do know they do.

You can group three photos together, or the ceramic Ant with a French Amphora Style Ceramic Vase and a MICUIT Dragonfly Water Bottle full of fresh flowers. And of course, you could mix two photos with a vase full of flowers.

By thinking in threes, you start to create curated collections that add interest yet working with a basic framework. You can bend this rule and try twos, fours or fives. Again experiment!

Always leave a tea tray visible!

Nothing looks quite as dramatic as a full tea tray, no matter how empty the teapot and cups are! Thankfully, Micucci Interiors offers superb tea and coffee sets that would look fantastic on display, including the Venezia 15 Piece Tea Set. A set, I’m hoping to add to my collection soon!

In doubt, draw inspiration from art

Within minutes of looking at the Micucci Interiors website, you’ll find some incredible pieces of art that will inspire you and help you find new colour trends and schemes you can try within your home.

But don’t stop there, art and more importantly, inspiration is all around, you just have to look for it and experiment!

Mix and match accessories for a unique interior

Hopefully, you have a much better idea of how to mix and match accessories to create a unique interior. The universal rules are continually be experimenting, think in terms of small groups (3 works wonders) and draw inspiration from your daily life.
